NFL/LISC Grassroots Program and Arizona Cardinals Grant $250,000 to Install a New Synthetic Turf Football Field at Phoenix’s Sevilla Elementary School

Award is part of $3 million in new grants to athletic fields nationwide

PHOENIX – MAY 21, 2019 – The Alhambra Elementary School District has been granted $250,000 by the Arizona Cardinals through the National Football League Foundation Grassroots Program to install a synthetic turf football field at Phoenix’s Sevilla Elementary School.

The grant from the Cardinals, the NFL Foundation, and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is part of $3 million in field refurbishment awards allocated this year.

The District will transform the existing grass field at Sevilla Elementary into a synthetic surfaced, regulation high school field, with goalposts, scoreboards, security fencing, bleachers and lighting.

The NFL Foundation/LISC Grassroots Field Grant Program – a partnership between the NFL Foundation and LISC, the nation’s leading community development support organization – has supported the construction or renovation of 365 football fields nationwide since 1998. During that time, the NFL Foundation has granted nearly $61 million to revitalize playing fields in underserved neighborhoods. Fields are newly built or significantly renovated, with improvements such as irrigation systems, lights, bleachers, scoreboards, goal posts and turf. Grassroots grants are issued once established funding thresholds are reached for each project.

“We are thrilled to assist our friends at the Alhambra Elementary School District with this very worthwhile project,” said Arizona Cardinals President MICHAEL BIDWILL. “We firmly believe in the value of playing football and other youth sports on a year-round basis. This field will provide kids opportunities to stay active and healthy that they might not have otherwise had.”

LISC identifies local, nonprofit, community-based agencies that have an interest in building or refurbishing football fields in schools and neighborhood parks. Through the program, local agencies are provided with the necessary financing and technical assistance to improve the quality and safety of fields in their communities. The agencies oversee the construction, maintenance and programming of the fields.

“Alhambra Elementary District has shown their commitment to offering their students high quality academics, athletics, arts and activities,” said TERRY BENELLI, LISC Phoenix Executive Director. “We’re excited to help Sevilla West provide a true home field for flag and tackle football teams at the school and from the community. By investing in this neighborhood asset, we know it will be well used for years to come.”
